Medicare Questions, Answered

Straightforward answers to the questions Phoenix-area residents ask most. Don't see yours? Just call — I'm happy to help.

Does it cost anything to work with you?

No. There's no fee for my help. I'm paid by the insurance company if you enroll in a plan, and a plan's premium is the same whether you use an agent or enroll on your own.

Are you part of Medicare or the government?

No. I'm a licensed, independent insurance agent. I'm not connected with or endorsed by Medicare, CMS, Social Security, or any government agency. For official information, visit Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY 1-877-486-2048).

When should I sign up for Medicare?

Most people sign up during their 7-month Initial Enrollment Period, which starts 3 months before the month they turn 65. If you're still working with employer coverage, you may be able to wait. Learn more about timing.

Do I need Part B if I'm still working?

It depends on your employer's size and your coverage. With coverage from current employment at an employer with 20 or more employees, many people can delay Part B without penalty. Read the details.

What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Advantage is an all-in-one private plan that replaces how you get Original Medicare, usually with a network. A Medicare Supplement works alongside Original Medicare to help pay out-of-pocket costs, and you can see any provider that accepts Medicare. Compare them.

Can I keep my doctors?

With Original Medicare (with or without a Medigap policy), you can see any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans usually have networks, so it's important to check your doctors before you enroll. I can help you check.

What happens if I miss my enrollment window?

You may have to wait for the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) and could owe late enrollment penalties for Part B and Part D. If you've had qualifying coverage, you may have a Special Enrollment Period instead.

Can I change my plan later?

Yes, during certain times. The Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) is the main opportunity. There's also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) and Special Enrollment Periods for certain life events. Switching Medigap policies may require answering health questions.

Do you represent every Medicare plan?

No. I represent several insurance companies, including Aetna, Devoted Health, HealthSpring, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare, but I don't offer every plan available in your area. For information on all your options, contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or Arizona's State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).

What should I bring to our appointment?

Your Medicare card (if you have it), a list of your doctors, your prescriptions with doses, your preferred pharmacy, and information about any current coverage.

Can you help me after I enroll?

Yes. I'm available for questions about claims, billing, or benefits, and I offer a yearly review before the Annual Enrollment Period to make sure your plan still fits.

Will I get a lot of calls after I contact you?

No. We'll contact you only in the way you choose, about the topic you asked about. We don't sell your information.
