The quick answer
Often yes — if your doctor is in the plan's network. Medicare Advantage plans usually use networks, so it's important to check each of your doctors before you enroll. With an HMO, out-of-network care is usually not covered except in emergencies; with a PPO, it's covered at a higher cost.
How to check
- Make a list of every doctor, specialist, and hospital you use.
- Check the plan's provider directory for each one — for the specific plan, not just the insurance company.
- Call the doctor's office and ask if they're in network for that exact plan next year.
HMO vs. PPO
- HMO: usually requires in-network providers and may require referrals to see specialists.
- PPO: lets you see out-of-network providers, usually for higher copays or coinsurance.
What if my doctor leaves the network?
Networks can change during the year. Plans must notify affected members, and in some cases a Special Enrollment Period may be available. You can also make changes during the next Annual Enrollment Period.
Want no networks at all?
Original Medicare lets you see any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Many people add a Medicare Supplement for cost protection.
