The quick answer
A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) lets you sign up for or change Medicare coverage outside the usual windows because of certain life events. Each SEP has its own rules and time limits, so it's important to act quickly.
Common situations that may qualify
- Losing employer or union coverage based on current employment
- Moving out of your plan's service area — including moving to Arizona from another state
- Qualifying for Extra Help or Medicaid, or a change in that status
- Moving into or out of a nursing home or other institution
- Your plan leaving your area or ending its Medicare contract
How long do you have?
It depends on the situation. For example, after losing employer coverage you generally have 8 months to enroll in Part B, but only 2 full months after the coverage ends to join a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.
What you may need
Some SEPs require proof, such as a letter showing when your employer coverage ended. Keep documents about your coverage and address changes.
